Folic acid is involved in hematopoiesis. Its deficiency leads to the accumulation of homocysteine in the blood plasma, which is an indicator of atherosclerotic changes. Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy can lead to fetal malnutrition and prematurity, and also increases the risk of birth defects in a child: defects of the spinal cord and cerebral cord, heart, kidneys.
Iodine is necessary for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland, as it is part of its hormones (thyroxine, triiodothyronine). With a lack of iodine, a pregnant woman and a newborn may develop endemic goiter, malnutrition and cretinism (incurable mental retardation). The need for folic acid and iodine increases greatly during pregnancy and lactation, and cannot be compensated in sufficient quantities even by a healthy and balanced diet. Therefore, in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (order No. 417 of 07/15/2011) , gynecologists, obstetricians and nutritionists prescribe to women of childbearing age, pregnant and breastfeeding women – to take 400 mcg of folic acid and 200 mcg of iodine daily.
This corresponds to one folio tablet.
