Levomycetin drops Pharmacodynamics
Levomycetin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, rickettsia, spirochetes, pathogens of trachoma, psittacosis, lymphogranuloma venereum; acts on strains of bacteria resistant to penicillin, streptomycin, sulfonamides. Weakly active against acid-fast bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, protozoa and clostridia. The resistance of microorganisms to chloramphenicol develops relatively slowly. In usual doses it acts bacteriostatically. The mechanism of the antimicrobial action of chloramphenicol is associated with a violation of the synthesis of proteins of microorganisms.
The drug penetrates well into tissues and body fluids; therapeutic concentrations of chloramphenicol, when administered locally in eye drops, are formed in the vitreous body, cornea, iris, aqueous humor of the eye; the drug does not penetrate into the lens.
Conjunctivitis, keratitis, blepharitis caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug.
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Skin diseases (psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections).
