Macropen is used to treat infectious diseases. Pathogens of infections of the respiratory system, genitourinary system, skin, mucous membranes of the body are sensitive to the drug.



Macropen composition
active substance: midecamycin acetate (myocamycin);
5 ml of suspension for oral administration (1 tablespoon) contains midecamycin acetate (myocamycin) – 175 mg;
Excipients: methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 216), citric acid, disodium phosphate anhydrous, flavoring banana powder (dextrose, sucrose, maltodextrin, gum arabic, flavoring, bananacone (FC bananale) 110 emulsion, saccharin sodium, mannitol (E 421).

Pharmacological properties
Macropen belongs to the group of macrolide antibiotics. Has a wide range of effects on microorganisms of different origins – gram-positive, gram-negative and intracellular pathogens.
For oral administration. It is rapidly absorbed and acts already after 60-120 minutes after ingestion.
It concentrates maximally and effectively at the site of inflammation, in the bronchi and skin.
The withdrawal of the drug from the body occurs through the liver.

The drug has proven itself in the fight against enteritis caused by campylobacter, is effective in diphtheria, getting rid of whooping cough.

Severe forms of liver disease, liver failure or allergy to any component of the drug.

The drug should be used in children over 2 months of age weighing more than 5 kg.

Application during pregnancy and lactation
It is not contraindicated for expectant mothers, but it should be prescribed with caution. The likelihood of a negative impact on the unborn child is high. Therefore, before prescribing Macropen to pregnant women, the risks and benefits for the woman’s body are carefully weighed.
The drug is usually not prescribed for nursing mothers. In any case, the doctor should make a decision about taking Macropen from the standpoint of risks and benefits. In the case of breastfeeding and taking the drug, then during the course of treatment, breastfeeding is suspended.

Method of administration and dosage
Suspension Macropen is designed for children for ease of use and the dosage is prescribed based on body weight. Reception is carried out twice a day.
Below are the calculations for children by weight in kilograms:

  • 0 to 5 kg 3.75 ml of suspension;
  • from 5 to 10 kg 7.5 ml;
  • from 10 to 15 kg 10 ml;
  • from 15 to 20 kg 15 ml;
  • from 20 to 25 kg 22.5 ml.

To prepare the suspension, 100 ml of water is added to the contents of the bottle. Stir the resulting mixture, shaking slightly.
For adults and children weighing over 30 kg, the release of the drug in tablets is provided for treatment.
The average daily dose of the drug in tablets is 1 tablet three times a day.
The maximum permissible daily dose for children is 30-50 mg per kilogram of body weight, for adults this dose is 1.6 g.
The maximum dose for children is divided into two doses, for adults – into three.
The usual course of therapy lasts a week and a half, with chlamydial infection – 2 weeks.

When taking more than the necessary dose of the drug, the person feels nausea and vomiting.
To get rid of these symptoms, sorbents should be taken to remove the drug from the body.
To avoid overdose, the drug should be used according to age-specific doses and kept away from prying children’s eyes and mouths.

Side effects
Taking Macropen is characterized by pronounced side reactions – an allergic skin rash, nausea, vomiting, a noticeable decrease in appetite (it rarely even reaches anorexia).
The amount of liver enzymes increases.
During the entire course of treatment, it is necessary to monitor the state of liver functioning.
If diarrhea begins, you should immediately consult a doctor, this may indicate the development of colitis.

Storage conditions
The finished mixture for the suspension is stored in the refrigerator for no more than 2 weeks.
For tablets, special conditions are not required, except for a dry room and a normal temperature of 25-27 C.
