This Picosen drug belongs to a group of drugs used in gastroenterology as a laxative.
The main active ingredients of the drug are sodium picosulfate and cassia leaves. This substance, which has laxative properties, belongs to the triarylmethane group.
Due to the metabolic processes that occur after the drug enters the body in the large intestine, as a result of its action, the absorption of fluids is slowed down, and the production of water and the release of electrolytes increases.
As a result, stool softening occurs, which also increases their volume, and produces additional stimulation of peristalsis in the intestine.
Sodium picosulfate has low absorption, little absorbed when it enters the intestine. Some partial absorption occurs only after the bacterial breakdown of the substance occurs. Absorption occurs when the drug enters the colon, then conjugation occurs and then the drug is excreted with the help of the intestine along with the secreted bile.
Cassia leaves contain amine glycosides, which have the ability to stimulate smooth muscle movement in the intestines.
This drug Picosen is used to treat:
- other conditions that require easier bowel movement (bowel movements).
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components.

- intestinal obstruction;
- bowel obstruction;
- severe dehydration;
- acute diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, including appendicitis;

When taken simultaneously with diuretics and adrenocorticosteroids, the risk of electrolyte imbalance may increase.
Should not be used in conjunction with antibiotics. they can weaken the effect of the laxative.
Not used in pediatrics until the age of 12.
