Propofol-Novo is used to induce general anesthesia in the patient and to maintain the state of anesthesia.
Main active ingredient: propofol.
Excipients included in the preparation: soybean oil, glycerin, lecithin, sodium hydroxide, oleic acid, water for injection, etc.
It is produced in the form of an emulsion for infusion, in vials or ampoules with a volume of 50 ml. One milliliter of the drug contains 20 mg of propofol.
Propofol-Novo belongs to the drugs used for anesthesia.
Propofol is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic used to put the patient under general (complete) anesthesia. Effective in cases where intensive care is required.
It is also used to maintain the patient in a state of general anesthesia, and also as a sedation drug (sedative half-nap). The speed of onset of general anesthesia from the moment of drug administration is from half a minute to one minute.
The duration of anesthesia depends on the dosage and the treatment that accompanies it. On average, anesthesia with this drug can last from 10 to 60 minutes.
When using this drug as anesthesia, the patient quickly regains consciousness upon awakening, since it is not a barbiturate – the eyes usually open no more than 10 minutes after the start of the awakening procedure.
The mechanism of action of the drug is not well understood. It is not an analgesic.
Propofol-Novo is used to bring the patient into general anesthesia and also to maintain the state of anesthesia.
They are also used to provide a state of sedation (half-sleep), which is usually necessary for patients in a state of incubation with:
- artificial lung ventilation;
- in the process of intensive care;
- when performing surgical and diagnostic procedures under regional or local anesthesia.
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components.
It is not used in patients under the age of 1 month from the date of birth.
When used in children under the age of 16, it is not used as a sedative – only as anesthesia.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
This drug is not used in the treatment of pregnant women (except for abortion) – as it can cause neonatal depression.
If it is necessary to administer the drug during breastfeeding, then during treatment, lactation should be suspended for several hours.
Method of administration and dosage
The calculation of the dosage and application is carried out exclusively in a hospital setting, by an experienced anesthesiologist, in the form of a bolus intravenous injection or infusion. The use by doctors – therapists, surgeons, etc. is excluded.
The dosage is calculated depending on the patient’s body weight, goals and reasons for use (anesthesia, maintenance of anesthesia, sedation), and the use of concomitant medications.
Can be used in combination with epidural or spinal anesthesia.
Propofol-Novo is administered in portions until the desired effect is achieved.
- with anesthesia – 40 mg of propofol every 10 seconds, at the rate of 1.5-2.5 mg per 1 kg of patient weight.
- while maintaining anesthesia – from 4 to 12 mg per 1 kg of patient weight per hour;
- while ensuring the state of sedation – 0.3 – 4 mg per 1 kg of the patient’s weight, per hour (no longer than 7 days).
With CVS diseases, it is possible to reduce the dosage to a minimum value of 1 mg per 1 kg of patient weight.
To reduce pain when the drug is administered, it is permissible to use lidocaine as a local anesthetic.
It is permissible to dilute the drug with glucose or sodium chloride.
In case of an overdose, depression of the heart and respiration may occur.
In case of respiratory depression, artificial ventilation is used, in case of cardiac depression, the patient’s head is lowered down, plasma substitutes and pressor agents are used.
The drug is well tolerated.
Possible side effects:
- pain at the injection site;
- thrombosis, phlebitis (rare);
- convulsions, pulmonary edema;
- headache, nausea, vomiting;
- anaphylactic symptoms – bronchospasm, edema, erythema, arterial hypotension;
- bradycardia, asystole, rhabdomiliosis, metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia, heart failure;
- coloration of urine in green, red-brown;
Storage conditions and periods
Expiration date – up to 3 years from the production date indicated on the package. After preparation of the drug, it should be used no longer than 6 hours. After this time, the remains of the drug are subject to destruction.
