Pharmacological properties
In a clinical study, the bronchodilator effect of Prospan was noted. Animal experiments have demonstrated the antispasmodic effect of the drug.
It is assumed that the secretolytic effect is caused by irritation of the gastric mucosa by reflex stimulation of the mucous glands of the bronchi through sensory parasympatholytic fibers.
Immunohistochemical and biophysical experiments in vitro showed inhibition of the uptake of β2-receptors by α-hederin – even under strong stimulation conditions – in alveolar epithelial cells of type II.
