Rotocan Composition and form of release
The main active ingredient: calendula, yarrow and chamomile, flower tincture.
Auxiliary components: ethanol (96%), which acts as an extractant.
Produced and marketed in the form of alcohol tincture, in bottles of 55 ml in volume.
Rotocan Pharmacological properties
This drug is included in the group of antiseptic drugs used both locally (in dentistry) and orally (in gastroenterology).
The preparation contains chamomile, calendula and yarrow.
Calendula (medicinal marigold) has long been used by various peoples as a wound healing, bactericidal and anti-inflammatory agent. Calendula flowers produce these effects due to the presence of biologically active components. They are contained inside the flowers and flower baskets of the plant. And they contain flavonoid and carotenoid glycosides.
Also, calendula owes its mechanism of action to the presence of saponins, tannins, essential oils, organic acids in its composition. When used, these components have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and moderate choleretic effect. They have a sedative effect on the central nervous system.
Yarrow produces a hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, sedative and diuretic effect.
In addition, its ability to protect liver cells makes it a hepatoprotector, which is effectively used in gastroenterology. Also, yarrow is important as a laxative, choleretic and disinfectant.
Chamomile has a soothing and anti-inflammatory effect.
It is used to treat:
- in dental practice for inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa – stomatitis, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis;
- diseases of the digestive system – chronic gastritis, duodenitis, functional dyspepsia, chronic colitis.
- It is also taken orally as a choleretic agent for biliary dyskinesia, cholangitis, cholecystitis (in combination therapy).
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or to one of the auxiliary components.
It should be borne in mind that tincture of calendula enhances the effect of other anti-inflammatory and choleretic agents, in particular, preparations based on chamomile and yarrow.
The drug contains ethanol, so it should not be administered orally if the diagnosis of alcoholism is established.
In pediatrics, it is used after reaching 12 years of age.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
This drug is not recommended for pregnant women.
If it is necessary to take the drug during breastfeeding, lactation is suspended.
Method of administration and dosage
Before use, dissolve 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of the drug in 200 ml of warm water.
Periodontal disease is treated locally after removal of dental plaque and instrumental treatment of pathological gingival pockets. Turundas, well moistened with the prepared solution of the drug, are introduced into the gingival pockets for 20 minutes. The procedure should be carried out daily or every other day (4-6 times).
With stomatitis and other diseases of the oral mucosa, the drug is prescribed in the form of applications from the prepared solution of the drug for 15-20 minutes, oral baths from the same solution lasting 1-2 minutes. Apply 2-3 times a day for 2-5 days.
In gastroenterology, Rotokan is used internally and in the form of microclysters:
- inside – a third of a glass of solution at the rate of 1 teaspoon of the drug per 200 ml of warm boiled water, half an hour before meals or 40-60 minutes after meals, 3-4 times a day.
- for microclysters – 1 tsp. preparation for 50-100 ml of warm boiled water (after cleansing the intestines) 1-2 times a day. The course of treatment is 15-20 days.
Overdose has not been reported.
In theory, an overdose can cause alcohol intoxication. the product contains ethyl alcohol.
In this case, symptomatic therapy, gastric lavage, diuresis, and sorbent intake are recommended.
The use of the drug rarely causes side effects, as it is well tolerated. In some cases, reactions from the immune system in the form of allergic reactions may occur, including skin redness, rash, itching, angioedema.
When taken orally, side effects from the digestive system may occur. In particular, there may be a feeling of bitterness in the mouth, burning sensation in the epigastrium, and abdominal pain.
