This drug belongs to a group of hepatoprotective drugs that treat the liver and biliary tract.
The main active ingredient of this drug – silymarin – is a hepatoprotector created on a natural basis of plant origin. Milk thistle extract that contains silymarin. Silymarin includes a combination of extracts that are secreted from milk thistle, in particular, silibinin (the main component), silidanin, silicristin, and other flavonol derivatives.
Silymarin, contained in a significant amount in milk thistle, stimulates metabolic processes in liver cells (cellular metabolism). It also has the property of activating the synthesis of proteins, which are known to be the main building material of the human body.
Also, when using silymarin, phospholipids are synthesized more intensively inside hepatocytes. Also, the drug prevents the destruction of membranes in cells. As a result, the drug prevents toxins from entering the liver cells.
This drug is used to treat liver diseases – both chronic and resulting from toxic damage to this organ, in particular:
- cirrhosis of the liver;
- fatty degeneration;
It is also effective as a prophylactic agent for the danger of alcohol and drug intoxication.
The drug in question is contraindicated for use in cases where the patient has severe hypersensitivity (allergy) to the main or one of the auxiliary components.
