Composition and form of release
The active ingredient is torasemide. Available in the form of a solution for intravenous injection.
The drug is from the group of diuretics, fast acting. It has the ability to eliminate puffiness, which is relevant for the treatment of hypertension, which helps to lower blood pressure. May be used to reduce sweating and swelling caused by heart failure.
The increase in the diuretic effect of the drug is in direct proportion to the size of the dose taken. A distinctive quality is that torasemide has a diuretic effect even in the absence of the effect of other drugs, in particular, with impaired renal function. A decrease in the amount of calcium in the arterial walls, in turn, decreases peripheral vascular resistance. Thanks to this effect of the drug, there is a decrease in blood pressure, facilitating the work of the heart.
Contraindicated in case of allergy to its components, lactose, as well as sulfonylurea class drugs. It is not used for low blood pressure, impaired renal function, anuria, imbalance in water and electrolyte balance.
It is recommended to refrain from drinking alcohol during therapy with this drug. It should also take into account its ability to reduce the effectiveness of drugs that are taken for hypoglycemia, as well as reduce the effect of epinephrine.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
The use of this drug is contraindicated both when carrying a child and during lactation.
Method of administration and dosage
In acute cases, treatment is started with an intravenous injection of 2 milliliters of the drug (10 milligrams in equivalent). It is permissible to double the dose if necessary. The maximum dose is 8 mg. The drug is administered intravenously, in a stream, very slowly. Intra-arterial administration is prohibited!
The drug should not be administered intravenously for more than 7 days. In the future, it is necessary to transfer the patient to oral administration.
Overdose cases are poorly understood. Theoretically, strong urination may occur, which entails the risk of dehydration, the occurrence of amentive syndrome, drowsiness, a sharp drop in pressure, and indigestion.
It is recommended to restore water balance, replenish potassium in the body. At the risk of anaphylactic shock, appropriate therapy is carried out – the patient is placed in a horizontal position, oxygen therapy is prescribed, and epinephrine is administered.
Side effects may occur, including bowel upset, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and disturbed water-electrolyte balance. The cardiovascular system can react with cardiac ischemia, hypercreatininemia. Allergic skin reactions are possible.
