Pharmacological properties

Chlorprothixene is a neuroleptic from the thioxanthene group.

The antipsychotic effect of neuroleptics is associated with blockade of dopamine receptors, but also with the possible involvement of 5-HT (5-hydroxytryptamine) receptors in this process.

Chlorprothixene has a high affinity for 5-HT2 receptors and α1-adrenoceptors and is similar in this respect to high-dose phenothiazines, levomepromazine, chlorpromazine, thioridazine and the atypical neuroleptic clozapine. It has a high histamine (H1) affinity, which is equal to the affinity of diphenhydramine. Chlorprothixene shows high affinity for cholinergic muscarinic receptors. The receptor binding profile is quite similar to that of clozapine, although chlorprothixene has almost 10-fold greater affinity for dopamine receptors.

Chlorprothixene is a sedative neuroleptic with a wide range of indications.

Chlorprothixene reduces or eliminates anxiety, obsessions, psychomotor agitation, anxiety, nervousness and insomnia, as well as hallucinations, mania and other psychotic symptoms. In low doses it has an antidepressant effect, which makes it acceptable for the treatment of mental disorders accompanied by anxiety-anxiety-depression syndrome; psychosomatic disorders.

Chlorprothixene does not cause addiction, dependence and tolerance. Thus, chlorprothixene is effective in the treatment of both psychotic states and a wide range of other mental disorders. In addition, chlorprothixene enhances the action of analgesics, has its own analgesic effect, antipruritic and antiemetic properties.

Truxal coated tablets is used to treat psychosis (without a symptom of depression of consciousness), including mania and schizophrenia, as well as for the treatment of withdrawal symptoms, age-related hyperactivity, neuroses, insomnia, depression, pain syndrome, psychosomatic disorders, behavioral disorders in pediatrics.
The active ingredients of the drug are able to block dopamine receptors, due to which the mechanism of sedation is triggered, antidepressant and analgesic effects are manifested. Truxal coated tablets also has adrenergic blocking, antihistamine activity, lowers blood pressure.
